The Best Self-Talk

Tears started to well up in her eyes.

She knew that beating herself up with her self-talk wasn’t beneficial, but she didn’t know what else to do.

All I asked was, is that how you think Jesus is talking to you when you make a mistake?

That’s when the tears started to flow.

From her intake form and from our first conversation I knew that her relationship with Jesus was very important to her, and from my experience I also knew that a lot of people who follow Jesus struggle with negative self-talk more than most.

Somewhere along the line people made her believe that Jesus was mad at her.

I shared a few stories with her about how God actually feels about her, because in the New Testament Jesus said if you have seen me you have seen the Father. Meaning, how Jesus treated people and cared about the sick, the dying, the diseased, the downtrodden, the outcasts, the screw-ups, the cheats, and the most deplorable members of society is how He feels about you and me. And He treated all of them with extravagant and relentless unconditional love and grace.

It’s not that sin isn’t a big deal to God, it is, so much so that He sent His only son to be beaten, tortured, and die a gruesome death on a cross, after living a perfect and blameless life. But through Jesus’ death and resurrection our past, present, and future sin has already been taken care of. So all that is left is for us is to trust in Jesus’ finished work, and for us to accept the free gift of unconditional love and grace.

Let me explain something I firmly believe. You and I never surprise God. He knew what stupid things I was going to do yesterday, today, and tomorrow. AND He still chose to live and die for me, and you, knowing full well all the bad and stupid things we would do.

Denzel Washington put it this way, “I didn’t always stick with Him, but He always stuck with me.”

There is nothing you or I can do to make God love us more, and there is also nothing you or I can do to make Him love us less. He is talking to you based off of who He is, not based off of what you do, how you feel about Him, or whether you even believe in Him.

So, if that is the case, then are you talking to yourself the way Jesus is after that mistake, that failure, or that setback? Because I can promise His voice is one of encouragement, belief, courage, strength, and unconditional love.
